As the seasons change and the temperatures drop, many motorhome owners start thinking about the best way to store and care for their vehicle during the off-season. Proper storage and maintenance not only keep your motorhome in top shape but also ensure that it’s ready for your next adventure when the warmer weather returns.

Here are some essential tips for motorhome storage and care over the off-season:

Clean Your Motorhome Inside and Out

Before storing your motorhome for the off-season, take the time to give it a thorough cleaning. This will help prevent dirt, mildew, and odours from building up during the months it’s parked.

  • Exterior: Wash the exterior to remove any dirt, bugs, or grime. Pay special attention to the roof and wheel wells. You can also wax the body to protect the paintwork from harsh winter conditions.
  • Interior: Clean the interior thoroughly, including vacuuming carpets and upholstery. Wipe down surfaces, and make sure there are no food scraps or moisture left behind, as this can attract pests or cause mould to form.

Drain the Water System

One of the most important tasks before storing your motorhome for the winter is draining the water system to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. Water left in pipes and tanks can freeze, causing pipes to burst.

  • Freshwater Tank: Empty the freshwater tank and drain the pipes by opening all the faucets and allowing any remaining water to flow out.
  • Water Heater & Other Appliances: Don’t forget to drain the water heater and other appliances connected to the plumbing system.
  • Antifreeze: Add RV antifreeze to the water lines, which will help prevent any residual water from freezing during the colder months.

Protect the Battery

Your motorhome’s battery is crucial for starting the engine and running essential systems. A dead battery can be a hassle when you’re ready to hit the road again.

  • Disconnect the Battery: If possible, disconnect the battery to avoid a slow drain. Store it in a cool, dry location away from moisture.
  • Check Battery Charge: Make sure the battery is fully charged before disconnecting it. Consider using a battery maintainer if you plan to leave the battery connected.

Seal Gaps and Vents

Over the off-season, your motorhome will be sitting idle for months, and unwanted visitors (like rodents) can sneak in through small gaps or vents. Seal any openings, including windows, doors, vents, and exhaust pipes.

  • Seal Vents & Windows: Use covers for vents and windows to keep out moisture, debris, and pests. This will also help regulate the internal temperature and humidity.
  • Check Seals: Ensure the seals around doors, windows, and roof hatches are intact. Replace any worn-out seals to prevent drafts and leaks.

Tire Care

Tires can suffer from long periods of sitting without moving. To keep your motorhome tires in good condition over the off-season, follow these tips:

  • Inflate Tires: Ensure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Under-inflated tires can develop flat spots over time.
  • Use Tire Covers: Consider using tire covers to protect your tires from UV rays, dirt, and moisture. If possible, lift the motorhome off the ground using jacks to take the pressure off the tires.

Check and Empty the Holding Tanks

Proper maintenance of your holding tanks (black and grey water) is critical to avoid unpleasant surprises when you’re ready to use your motorhome again.

  • Empty Tanks: Make sure both the black and grey water tanks are empty before storing the motorhome. This will prevent unpleasant odours and bacteria growth.
  • Clean Tanks: Use a tank cleaner to remove any residue or buildup from the tanks.

Consider Indoor Storage

If you have the space and budget, storing your motorhome indoors can protect it from the elements and keep it in better condition over the winter. Indoor storage offers protection from snow, rain, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations. If indoor storage isn’t an option, ensure the storage area is dry, clean, and well-ventilated.

Regular Checks During Storage

While it’s not necessary to start your motorhome during the off-season, it’s a good idea to check on it periodically. Start the engine once every month or so to keep the engine in good shape and the battery charged. You can also perform a visual inspection to make sure no issues arise while it’s in storage.

Proper motorhome storage and care over the off-season is essential for maintaining your vehicle’s condition and ensuring it’s ready for your next trip. By following these steps, you can avoid costly repairs and extend the lifespan of your motorhome. Whether you’re storing your vehicle for a few months or longer, taking the time to perform these maintenance tasks will give you peace of mind and a smooth start when the adventure season returns.
