Grand California 600

The 2024 Volkswagen Grand California 600 is Volkswagen’s factory-built motorhome designed for travellers who want the drivability of a large van combined with the comfort of a compact motorhome. Built on the proven Crafter platform, the Grand California 600 blends premium cabin quality, smart storage and long-distance touring practicality into a camper that feels equally at home on campsites, mountain roads or coastal adventures.

At just under six metres long, the “600” is the shorter and more versatile version of the Grand California range, making it easier to manoeuvre than larger coachbuilt motorhomes while still offering a full kitchen, washroom and fixed rear bed.

Exterior & Design

The Grand California 600 has a clean, modern design with Volkswagen’s signature styling throughout. The high roof gives excellent standing room inside while maintaining a streamlined silhouette. Large side windows and skylights create a bright, airy feel, and the integrated awning and camping furniture setup make it ideal for outdoor living.

Key exterior dimensions include:

• Length: 5.986m
• Width: 2.040m
• Height: 2.971m
• Wheelbase: 3.640m

Despite its size, the van remains surprisingly manageable on UK roads and ferries well for European touring.

Interior Layout

Inside, the Grand California 600 feels more premium than many traditional camper conversions. Volkswagen has focused heavily on comfort, lighting and practical living space.

Sleeping Area

The rear features a fixed transverse double bed measuring approximately 1,930 x 1,360mm. There is also a smart over-cab bed allows the van to sleep up to four people, making it suitable for couples or small families. Ambient lighting, USB charging points and supportive mattresses help create a genuinely comfortable sleeping environment.

Kitchen

The kitchen is compact but well-equipped, featuring:

• Gas hob
• Sink
• Fridge
• Pull-out worktop extensions
• Multiple storage cupboards

Volkswagen has maximised the available space extremely well, giving the van a practical touring setup without feeling cramped.

Washroom

One of the standout features is the fully integrated wet room. Unlike many campervans in this size class, the Grand California includes:

• Toilet
• Fold-away sink
• Shower
• Storage shelving
• Integrated lighting

The clever folding basin design creates more usable space while maintaining a proper bathroom feel.

Storage & Touring Practicality

The Grand California 600 offers impressive storage throughout, including:

• Large under-bed garage space
• Overhead lockers
• Kitchen storage
• Equipment compartments
• External camping setup storage

The rear garage area is especially useful for bikes, outdoor gear or longer touring equipment.

What Makes It Stand Out?

The Grand California 600 appeals to buyers wanting:

• Premium Volkswagen build quality
• Compact dimensions with full facilities
• Comfortable long-distance touring
• Strong resale values
• Easy everyday usability

Compared with many aftermarket camper conversions, the Grand California feels purpose-built from the factory rather than retrofitted.

Verdict

The 2024 Volkswagen Grand California 600 is one of the most refined campervans in its class. It successfully combines the practicality of a compact motorhome with the quality and driving confidence expected from Volkswagen.

For couples or small families wanting a capable all-season touring van with genuine comfort, modern technology and excellent usability, the Grand California 600 is a standout option in the premium campervan market.
