Motorhome travel is all about freedom and adventure, whatever time of year you choose to travel. Believe it or not, some motorhomers don’t just restrict their trips to the warmer months, they choose to hit the road during autumn and winter, too. Going all Vivaldi is exciting, with all four seasons well doable for motorhomers. Each, though, comes with its own set of challenges and rewards.

In this edition of the rove! blog we’ll explore them all. We’ll give you the key seasonal considerations, offer details of some amazing places to visit and provide you with expert tips for making the most of your year-round motorhome opportunities! From muddy spring roads to getting ready for a cosy winter escape, here’s the essential knowledge you need to get the most out of every journey.

Summer

We’ll start our seasonal overviews with the months most traditionally associated with holidays. Summer in the UK offers warm weather, long days and the perfect conditions for exploring new places in your motorhome. However, of course, it also brings unique considerations for staying comfortable and safe. During the warmer months, it’s important to manage the heat inside your motorhome so that it doesn’t become a hothouse, particularly on days when the temperature climbs above 30°C.

  • Ventilation: One of the easiest ways to keep a motorhome cool is with proper ventilation. Open all the windows when you’re parked up or use the roof vents to allow hot air to escape. If your motorhome has air conditioning, make sure it works properly, especially if you’re spending time inside during the day.
  • Shade: Parking in the shade can make a big difference. Look for sites with ample trees, or use a motorhome awning to create a shaded area to relax in.
  • Fans: Take along a portable fan or battery-operated cooling unit to help circulate air inside your motorhome on those sweltering days.

During hot weather, fire safety and staying hydrated are key priorities.

  • Fire safety: Summer heat increases the risk of wildfires, especially in more rural areas. Avoid flames near dry grass or brush, and make sure all cooking gear, including gas bottles, is stored securely and not exposed to extreme heat.
  • Hydration: Make sure you carry plenty of water and stay hydrated, especially on hot days. Take extra bottles of water to avoid running out.

Our Pick of the Best Summer Destinations

Summer in the UK is often synonymous with outdoor music and culture festivals, beach holidays or long hiking trails. If you plan to stay on campsites during the summer, it’s important to book in advance, as demand is at a peak during summer months (particularly July and August).

  • South Devon: With golden beaches, dramatic cliffs and charming towns like Salcombe (great for water sports), South Devon is truly ideal for a sunny summer motorhome trip. Be sure to book your campsite(s) early, especially if you plan to stay near popular spots like Torquay or Dartmouth.
  • Scottish Highlands: If you’re more interested in rugged landscapes and scenic beauty than endless beaches, head to the Scottish Highlands. Summer provides perfect conditions for hiking and biking – though you should probably prepare yourself for the midges, especially in the evening! Carry insect repellent. There are lots of campsites to park up at, and great places to visit. Go monster spotting at Loch Ness and take in the awesome views of iconic mountain Ben Nevis.
  • The Isle of Wight: Another popular summer destination for motorhomers, with some beautiful beaches, coastal paths and family-friendly campsites. Its usually mild weather makes it the perfect destination for summer exploration. There are plenty of things to do and places to go for all the family to enjoy.

Autumn

Autumn is all about beautiful colours, crisp air and a quieter time on the roads. The summer tourists have begun to disperse and head back home, so this is a fantastic season for those who are into year-round motorhome travel. Quieter campsites and quieter times at breathtaking landscapes – sounds perfect! As the temperatures drop a little and the daylight hours shorten, there are several things you should do to prepare for your autumn trips.

  • Lighting: Make sure you have adequate lighting inside and outside your motorhome. Battery-powered lanterns are a good option for outdoor use, and extra LED lights inside can help brighten things up as evening approaches.
  • Layering: Pack plenty of layers of clothing, including warm outers. Woolly blankets and sleeping bags are great for keeping you warm on colder nights.
  • Heating: Ensure the motorhome’s heating system is working properly well before you set off on your trip. Many motorhomes come with built-in heating systems, but if yours doesn’t, consider using portable heaters designed for vehicle use.

Autumn can also bring heavier rainfall, so it’s important to do some maintenance checks on your motorhome before setting off.

  • Gutter: Autumn leaves can quickly block gutters, leading to leaks and water damage. Regularly clean out the gutters and check seals around your windows and doors to make sure they’re still in good condition.
  • Rain seals and roof checks: Sealant around windows and doors can wear over time. Inspect the roof for any cracks or damage and reseal where necessary.

Our Pick of the Best Autumn Destinations

Autumn is a visually magical time. Forests and parks become a vibrant display of rich reds, oranges, browns and yellows. Seeing these colours in nature in some of the UK’s best spots is highly recommended.

  • New Forest: Known for its ancient woodlands, the New Forest is a national park offering a gorgeous spectacle of autumn colours. You might also catch a glimpse of the wild ponies that roam freely here. There are plenty of family-friendly activities in the New Forest during autumn, too.
  • Exmoor: With beautiful moorland and dramatic coastline, the landscape of Exmoor is perfect for autumn drives. The rolling hills and dense woodlands burst into colour during autumn, and the sea looks as magnificent as ever. For history lovers, Dunster Castle and Arlington Court offer plenty to explore.
  • Forest of Dean: One of England’s oldest forests, with fantastic walking trails where you’ll encounter an abundance of beautiful autumn colours in the leaves and natural surroundings. The Forest is a stronghold for nature, with large areas of woodland and open space providing habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.

Winter

Winter motorhome travel brings unique challenges for both the motorhome and you, though it can be incredibly rewarding. The colder weather means plenty of preparation and planning are needed. This is a process called winterisation, and it’s done to prevent freezing and to keep your heating system running smoothly.

  • Antifreeze: Ensure that your water system is winterised with antifreeze. This will prevent pipes from freezing and cracking during low temperatures.
  • Insulation: Many motorhomes come with built-in insulation, but adding extra blankets or thermal curtains can also help retain precious heat. You could also even add reflective foil or foam insulation around windows to stop heat loss.
  • System checks: Before setting off, make sure your motorhome’s heating system is fully functioning. If it uses gas or diesel, ensure the fuel system is well maintained. Portable gas heaters are another option for colder nights.

When you’re motorhoming in winter, certain items are essential for staying safe and comfortable.

  • Snow Chains: If you’re heading to snowy areas, bring snow chains to ensure that you can still drive safely on icy roads.
  • De-Icer: Carry de-icer for your motorhome’s windows and locks.
  • Portable Generator: If you’re staying at campsites which have limited amenities, a portable generator can be great for providing heat, lights or cooking power.

Our Pick of the Best Winter Destinations

Winter is visually amazing and can be a wonderful time for the most cosy getaways. There are plenty of festive trips and quiet winter retreats to choose from.

  • Scottish Highlands: We mentioned them earlier, but the Scottish Highlands are as magical in winter as they are spectacular in summer. When they’re dusted with snow, the mountain passes, and remote villages of Scotland make for a magical motorhome adventure.
  • Bath: The Christmas Market in this famous southern town typically run from late November to December and provide a great destination for festive motorhome trips. The city itself is stunning during winter, with a different perspective on its world-famous Roman Baths and an abundance of Georgian architecture.
  • Lake District: A serene winter retreat can be found amongst some of the most stunning landscapes the UK has to offer. Visit towns like Keswick and Ambleside, where you can enjoy winter walks, cosy pubs and peaceful lakeside views.

Spring

We’re almost all the way back round the seasonal clock in this blog. Just Spring left to look at. This can be a beautiful time to explore the UK. The longer days, milder weather and blossoming landscapes make for something special.

One of the key challenges presented by spring is the fact that the weather can be a little on the unpredictable side. The combination of rain, sunshine and melting snow can turn campsites and rural roads into quagmires.

  • Essential gear: Invest in heavy-duty floor mats for your motorhome as these will be very useful in keeping mud and debris under control. A portable shower or pressure washer could also be useful for cleaning off muck from your tyres or motorhome exterior.
  • Tyre Care: Wet conditions demand more from your tyres. Make sure they have sufficient tread depth and that they’re properly inflated. If you’re venturing onto dirt roads or more remote campsites, consider putting on all-terrain tyres or carrying a spare.
  • Traction Tips: In muddy conditions, try to avoid sharp turns or sudden stops, as these can cause the motorhome to get stuck. If you do happen to get stuck, use traction mats, sand or gravel to help your tyres grip. Always carry a tow rope.

Our Pick of the Best Spring Destinations

Spring is the perfect time to explore the UK’s natural beauty. Fields and woodlands are fresh and coming to life and there are some great destinations to visit.

  • Cotswolds: Famous for rolling hills and picturesque villages, the Cotswolds is a stunning destination in spring. Visit during April or May to see the wildflowers bloom and enjoy the region’s lovely gardens, as well as its historic houses (such as Berkeley CastleBlenheim Palace or Sudeley Castle).
  • Kew Gardens: If you’re a fan of horticulture, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew are a London must-visit. The Spring Garden Festival, typically held in April, showcases the very best of spring blooms.
  • Cornwall: With its mild climate, Cornwall enjoys an early spring bloom. The coastal scenery combined with spring flowers makes it a fantastic destination to visit during the spring months. There are absolutely loads of places to visit and activities to undertake, so all the family should be entertained during a visit to this wonderful part of the UK.

All Seasons Tips

While each of the four seasons has its own unique character, there are some universal tips which apply to motorhome travel all year round.

  • Emergency Kit: Always travel with a well-stocked emergency kit made up of first aid supplies, a fire extinguisher, tyre repair kits, a warning triangle, basic tools and jump cables.
  • Packing: Given that the British weather can be unpredictable, even though you’re going somewhere hot in summer (say), you should also have clothes aboard that are appropriate for a change in conditions. Waterproof jackets, wellies and extra layers should be taken regardless of the season.
  • Maintenance: Check your motorhome’s battery, tyres and fluid levels on a regular basis, to ensure everything’s in optimum condition, no matter the season. This helps to prevent unexpected breakdowns or difficulties.
